Texas Observer - "The Death Toll" - Lead Illo and 2 Spot-Illos - November 2023

The topic is serious: It's about the high rate of seriously injured or even killed workers during the construction of Texas highways. As traffic continues to increase in the second largest state in the U.S., more and more roads are needed, which are then often built by (illegal) immigrants, e.g. from Mexico - often the workers are not well instructed, are poorly or not at all provided with safeguards - and when something happens, the incidents are often not even registered. Terrible conditions in an important article that I was privileged to accompany with pretty gritty illustrations.

Das Thema ist ernst: Es geht um die hohe Quote an schwerverletzen oder sogar getöteten Arbeitern beim Bau der Texanischen Autobahnen. Da der Verkehr immer weiter zunimmt im zweitgrößten Bundesstaat der USA, werden immer mehr Straßen benötigt, die dann oft von (illegalen) Einwanderern, z.B. aus Mexiko, gebaut werden - oft werden die Arbeiter nicht gut eingewiesen, werden schlecht bis gar nicht mit Sicherungen - und wenn etwas passiert, werden die Vorfälle oftmals nicht mal registriert. Schlimme Zustände in einem wichtigen Artikel, den ich mit düsteren Illustrationen begleiten durfte.

Thematically, it's quite complex - it's about school-political-elections and power struggles and how the groups are instrumentalized by certain interest groups. Initially, we had the idea of working with the image of the "hydra" - which was ultimately transformed into an "ominous puppeteer".

Thematisch ist es recht komplex - es geht um schulpolitische Wahl- und Machtkämpfe und wie die Gruppen von gewissen Interessengruppen für ihre Belange instrumentalisiert werden. Zunächst hatten wir die Idee, mit dem Bild der "Hydra" zu arbeiten - was schlussendlich aber dann doch in einen "ominösen Puppenspieler" umgewandelt wurde.
