The article "The Canary Papers" is about African refugee children who come to the Canary Islands to live a better life. Many of them come from Countries like Senegal, Mali, Morocco or Gambia. They are talented but often just want to play soccer in the amateur clubs but can't get a license because of a FIFA rule - professional clubs can't buy/sell kids from other continents - so they can't get beyond training sessions.

Viele von ihnen kommen aus dem Senegal, Mali, Marokko oder Gambia. Sie sind talentiert, wollen oft aber einfach nur Fußball in den Amateurvereinen spielen, können aber wegen einer Regel der FIFA - die Profivereine dürfen keine Kinder von anderen Kontinenten kaufen/verkaufen - keine Lizenz bekommen und kommen somit nicht über Trainingseinheiten hinaus.

The article is about a 2002 FIFA-World-Cup-Qualifying-Match that took place 20 years ago, in April 2001, between Australia and American Samoa - and its aftermath. Australia just destroyed its opponents, most of them were just teenagers, and finally won 31-0, which is the highest win ever in international football. American Samoa had been at the bottom of the Fifa rankings for more than a decade. They won their first match in 2011 in front of the cameras of two American directors who were there to make a documentary about "the worst soccer team in the world."

Nicky Salapu, the goalkeeper who was beaten 31 times, had nightmares for several years, and he admits he still has bad nights 20 years later. In the article, he reveals that to cure himself, he plays Fifa on Xbox. He plays against Australia with any team he can find and lets them play without the controller because so he can beat them high. He says it's a kind of revenge for him. At that time he was only 20 years old, even today he is still actively playing for the national team.

Australien zerstörte seine Gegner, von denen ein großer Teil nur Teenager waren, nur durch und gewann schließlich 31:0, was der höchste Sieg im internationalen Fußball überhaupt ist. Amerikanisch-Samoa stand mehr als zehn Jahre lang auf dem letzten Platz der Fifa-Rangliste. Ihr erstes Spiel gewannen sie 2011 vor den Kameras von zwei amerikanischen Regisseuren, die dabei waren, um einen Dokumentarfilm über "die schlechteste Fußballmannschaft der Welt" zu drehen. Der Film wurde 2014 veröffentlicht ("Next Goal Wins"), 2022 wird eine Spielfilm-Hollywood-Adaption mit Michael Fassbender in der Hauptrolle in die Kinos kommen.

Nicky Salapu, der Torhüter, der 31 Mal geschlagen wurde, hatte mehrere Jahre lang Albträume, und er gibt zu, dass er auch 20 Jahre später noch schlechte Nächte hat. In dem Artikel verrät er, dass er, um sich zu kurieren, Fifa auf der Xbox spielt. Er spielt gegen Australien mit jeder Mannschaft, die er findet, und lässt sie ohne Pad spielen, da er sie hoch zu Null schlagen kann. Er sagt, es sei eine Art Rache für ihn. Damals war er 20 Jahre alt, auch heute noch ist spielt er aktiv für die Nationalmannschaft.

For the French soccer-magazine SO FOOT I was allowed to do a whole series of illustrations: a lead-double-page and 3 single illustrations. The theme is "Depression, aggression, pressure, bullying (in social media) in soccer" - highly interesting and of course a big topic here in Germany, too!

Für das französische Fußball-Magazin SO FOOT durfte ich gleich eine ganze Reihe von Illustrationen machen: eine Aufmacher-Doppelseite und 3 Einzelillustrationen. Thematisch geht es um das Thema "Depressionen, Agressionen, Druck, Mobbing (im Social Media) im Fußball" - höchst interessant und auch bei uns in Deutschland natürlich ein großes Thema!
